The HSBC Champions has been played each November since 2005 at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. Additionally, as of last year's event, played November 5-8, 2009, the HSBC also became part of the World Golf Championship (WGC).

The World Golf Championships announcement was made in April of 2009 and the HSBC Champions is now the fourth WGC tournament on the worldwide calendar, joining the Accenture Match Play Championship, the CA Championship, and the Bridgestone Invitational events.

The title sponsor, HSBC, is the sponsor of one other professional tournament, the HSBC Women's Champions event held in Singapore. HSBC has also previously sponsored the HSBC World Match Play Championship from 2003 to 2007 and the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship on the LPGA Tour from 2005 to 2007. HSBC also briefly co-sponsored the Enjoy Jakarta HSBC Indonesia Open, an event co-sanctioned by the Asian and European Tours in 2006, and was also a sponsor of the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship.

Although many players, mainly Americans, who play primarily on the North American PGA Tour declined their 2005 invites, the HSBC Champions still featured several prominent players – including twenty from the world's top-fifty list – and offered a purse of $5,000,000, an amount greater than that of any other tournament played in Asia or Oceania. The intent of this large prize is not only in recognition of the collective quality of the players, but also serves to encourage other players, especially from the European Tour, to enter. This in turn furthers the Tour's expansion efforts into eastern and southeastern Asia, with the HSBC Champions event being the most significant event held in that part of the world.
