 The Mercedes-Benz Championship is the opening tournament of each PGA Tour season, with the field limited only to golfers having won an event on the Tour sometime during the previous season. Since 1999, it is played the first weekend in January at the Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course in Lahaina, Hawaii. Between the venue and the participant qualifications of this annual opening tournament, tickets are amongst the most popular each and every year.
Prior to 1999, the Mercedes-Benz Championship was played in Las Vegas from its inauguration in 1953 and until 1968; first at the Desert Inn Country Club through 1966, and then at the Stardust Country Club in 1967 and 1968. After that, the tourney began a 30-year relationship with the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, which lasted until being moved to its current location in Hawaii.
The history of Mercedes-Benz Championship carries with it some interesting notes and trivia. Jack Nicklaus holds the record with five wins in this event, with the Golden Bear winning in 1963, 1964, 1971, 1973 and 1977. Only two golfers have won the Mercedes three straight years; Gene Littler in 1955-57 and Stuart Appleby in 2004-06. Two other prominent names have won the Mercedes-Benz Championship three times total over the course of their careers; Arnold Palmer in 1962, 1965 and 1966, and Tom Watson in 1979, 1980 and 1984. The overall tournament record is 261, posted by Ernie Els in 2003, and the single day course record of 62 is held by K.J. Choi in 2002.
