 In the 1983 Sony Open, Isao Aoki became the PGA Tour's first ever Japanese winner after he holed a wedge shot on the very last hole to beat Jack Renner by one stroke. In the 2007 event, at the age of 16 years and 4 days, amateur Tadd Fujikawa become the second youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut on the PGA Tour – an achievement that was additionally highlighted by his fifteen-foot eagle putt on the 36th hole, Waialae's 551-yard par-5 18th. The 2010 Sony was won by Ryan Palmer who took home a $990,000 prize check for his efforts. The Sony Open has gained additional notoriety for giving teen phenom Michelle Wie numerous sponsor invitations to play in the event in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. While Wie did not get one in 2008, 17-year old Alex Ching, coincidentally a former high school classmate of Wie's, did receive one. Given the world-wide appeal and vast international field of participants, the Sony Open is one of the most coveted tickets on the PGA Tour each and every year.
