Tour Championship Tickets THE TOUR Championship, presented by Coca-Cola since 2002, is a limited-field event that has long been considered the grand finale to the big-money portion of the PGA Tour calendar. Since 2007 it has also served as the final round of the FedExCup "playoff" series, which crowns the FedExCup champion. THE TOUR Championship field is limited to the top thirty golfers on the FedExCup playoff points list, and is one of the richest tournaments on the tour. Historically, THE TOUR Championship was the final event of golf's PGA Tour season, with several courses hosting the tournament between 1987 and 1996. Beginning in 1997, the event alternated between Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas and East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, with East Lake remaining THE TOUR Championship's permanent home since 2004. Through 2006, the top thirty money winners on the PGA Tour after the last regular-season event, qualified for THE TOUR Championship, which took place in early November, the week after the Volvo Masters, a comparable event in Europe. This allowed players from both the PGA and European Tours to play in both end-of-season events. After THE TOUR Championship, the money list for the season was finalized, even though there were, and still are, a few additional events between THE TOUR Championship and Christmas which are recognized as official PGA Tour events, while the prize money won in them is considered unofficial. Also, because THE TOUR Championship's field is not as large as other golf tournaments, there is no 36-hole cut; all players who start the event are credited with making the cut and receive some prize money and, since 1998, THE TOUR Championship winner receives a three-year PGA Tour exemption, if not already exempt through other means.

 In 2007, THE TOUR Championship was moved from November to between the middle and end of September, where it is now the last of four events which make up the FedExCup playoffs. As in past years, thirty players qualify for the event, but now the basis for qualification is no longer prize money, but FedExCup points accumulated during the season. Given the tournament's status as the final FedExCup event, the FedExCup is awarded to the player who has accumulated the most FedExCup points for the entire season. In 2007, Tiger Woods won both the 2007 TOUR Championship and the inaugural FedExCup, while in 2008 THE TOUR Championship was won by Camilo Villegas, with Vijay Singh winning the FedExCup. There are only two men to have won THE TOUR Championship more than once – Tiger Woods (1999, 2007) and Phil Mickelson (2000, 2009) – and those are the same two who both won something of significance here in 2009. Woods claimed his second career FedExCup Championship title, while Mickelson took THE TOUR Championship tournament victory in style. Mickelson may have been handed the smaller check, but felt like the biggest winner. Although this was the eighth time that golf's two biggest stars had finished 1-2 in a tournament, never have they shared the spotlight, each leaving with a trophy that was meaningful in its own way. While Tiger's season-long consistency was rewarded with the FedExCup, Mickelson capped off an emotional summer at home with a spectacular rally at East Lake, closing with a 5-under-par 65 to go from four shots behind to a three-shot victory – his first since his wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring.
