Grinspoon are an alternative/ grunge rock band from Lismore, Australia. It consists of four members drums by Kristian Hopes , Phil Jamieson with Pat Davern on guitar and bass by Joe Hansen. The band was founded in 1995 and derived their name from Dr Lester Grinspoon a marijuana supporter. Grinspoon rose to fame after being Unearthed to their track " Sickfest" by Triple J thanks a national and commercial-free radio station. They won the competition for the Lismore area. In the early days Grinsppon was heavily influenced by grunge music. They soon build a strong fan following from the mosh pit crowds. But in the later years the sound of the band was more mainstream rock sound. Grinspoon have given many successful and memorable albums. Grinspoon gained considerable airplay due to winning the national Unearthed competition. They secured gigs for themselves resulting in a large fan base in the mosh and alternative crowd. In 1995 they released their first EP " Green EP". The EP was released with an independent record company Oracle. The album had popular singles like " Sickfest" and " More Than You Are". The second EP of Grinsppon was " Licker Bottle Cozy" released in 1996. The EP was released by Grudge Records. The EP had six songs with little heavier sound. " Champion" , "Pig Pen" were among the six songs in the EP.
In 1999 they released a LP titled " Guide To Better Living". The album was a reflection of the sound and variety which was found in the early part of the career. The album had heavy songs like " Pressure Tested 1984". There were some classic rock songs like " Don't Go Away" and " Repeat". While " Bad Funk Stripe" was a ballad. It also had five more songs demonstrating the sense of humor of the band and capability of the band to perform live. "Protest" was a hidden acoustic song. In 1998 Grinspoon released an EP titled " Pushing Buttons". The album was marked by famous heavy song " Black Friday" along with lighter songs like "Explain" and "Busy". In 1999 they recorded a LP "Easy" which was not so successful.

Grinspoon then took a break for reconsidering their direction and sound. In 2002 the band released an album " New Detention". The album was a huge hit. On the Australian ARIAnet albums chart it reached #2. The first single of the album " Chemical Heart" was very different from their regular grunge sound. It reflected the change in the style of the band. In 2003 another successful EP was released called " Panic Attack". The album featured as #13 on the ARIAnet singles chart. The album " Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills" on the charts debuted at #4. The two singles from the album " Hard Act To Follow" and " Hold On Me" on the singles chart reached the top 30. Grinspoon regularly play at the music festivals of Australia. " Thrills, Kills & Sunday Pills" in 2005 won them the first ARIA award for the category Rock Album of the Year. Grinspoon very recently released " Best In Show" which is a 2 Disc Best Of compilation. The first CD contained all the hits along with old classic songs. The second disc consisted of covers recorded over the years. At the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony held in Melbourne Grinspoon played " Better Off Alone" and " Hard Act To Follow".
