Guess Who
he Guess Who is a rock band from Canada. It was formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1962. Current members of band are Laurie MacKenzie, Leonard Shaw, Carl Dixon, Garry Peterson and Jim Kale. The Guess Who is a band which has been able to develop a large fan following not only in their native country but also outside their country. The Guess Who in their initial years had twice changed names. In 1960 they were known as Chad Allan and the Reflections. Name was later changed to Chad Allan and the Expressions. Chad Allan and the Expressions in 1962 signed with Quality Records. They released many singles but all were flop. In 1964 came the first hit single " Shakin' All Over". The single was number one in Canad while in United States of America it was number 22. Immediate releases after " Shakin' All Over" were very successful in Canada but outside Canada their work could not garner much success. In 1965 Burton Cummings entered band as co-lead vocalist and keyboardist. Other lead vocalist was Chad Allen. But after few months Allen departed from band and Cummings was now full-time lead singer. "The Guess Who?" was the name of band at this time. In 1968 the question mark was dropped and they got their present name The Guess Who.
During this period along with change in line- up, sound of band also underwent change. Their sound now incorporated jazz, blues and rock s compared to their earlier sound which was Merseybeat-inspired rock. In 1969 they released ballad " These Eyes" on RCA Records. In US it was Top 10 hit. Album " American Woman" composed of edgier hard-rock sound. Title track of album was a smash hit especially in US where it was number one hit.

Randy Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 due to lifestyle differences. His place in band was taken by two guitarist, Greg Leskiw and from Brother band came Kurt Winter. They gave more successful numbers like " Hand Me Down World", " Albert Flasher", " Share The Land" and " Hang On to Your Life". In 1972 they recorded " Live at the Paramount". The album recorded in Seattle at Paramount Theatre was highly praised. In November and December of 1972 The Guess Who toured to New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In 1972 and 1973 band saw departure of Leskiw and bassist Jim Kale respectively. Leskiw was replaced by Don McDougal. While Bill Wallace was the new bassist. " Clap For The Wolfman" was another big hit of band, it was written by Winter, Cummings and Wallace. In 1974 McDougal and Winter left. New lead guitarist was Domenic Troiano and chief chief songwriting collaborator was Cummings. After going through so many changes in line-up band finally broke up in 1975.
However in 1983 The Guess Who was reunited by Garry Peterson, Jim Kale, Bachman and Cummings for performing series of gigs. They also recorded a live album " Together Again". The Guess Who at Brandon University in Brandon in 2001 received honorary doctorates. In August 2006 they performed at Seven Springs in Pennsylvania at a personal function for Sheetz Inc.
