High on Fire was formed by guitarist Matt Pike in 1998 just six months after the disintegration of his previous band, the metal legend "SLEEP." Matt formed the band just out of his hunger to simply play his guitar, he teamed up with powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime buddy George Rice. They had barely been a team for a few months and they churned out three demo songs. The demo featured songs like "Master of Fists" and "10,000 Years." "Blood from Zion," went on to become one of the most sought-after tapes in contemporary rock history.

Labels were running after the trio even before they even made their first live appearance. The band eventually chose the Man's Ruin label. Their first collaboration, "The Art of Self-Defense," was released by Man's Ruin Records in 1999. The album was very well received and won its share of publicity. After two years of laying low they released "Surrounded by Thieves."
High On Fire started the year 2004 on a high note by being named as one of Alternative Press Magazine's "25 Most Important Metal Bands." Also in 2004, the band saw a personnel change, the lineup was joined by bassist Joe Preston, he replaced long time bassist George Rice and became part of the power trio.
The band extensively toured the country and garnered an ever-increasing fan base. By the time the group unleashed their third installment, "Blessed Black Wings," in early 2005 they had built a their reputation as one of the most widely respected heavy metal outfits on the planet.
