Way back in 1993 singer Patrick Monahan was bust covering led Zeppelin in Erie, Pennsylvania. A year later he had left the two and relocated to California. He teamed up with Rob Hotchkiss on vocals and recruited guitarist Jimmy Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin, and drummer Scott Underwood to form Train. Eventually the band shrunk from five to three, becoming stars with Monahan, Underwood, and Stafford.

This trio was far from any inkling of a Houston Rodeo appearance in the late 1990s. They developed their sound over the course of a record label direction and gigs as a supporting act for national tours for popular acts of the day like Barenaked Ladies, Cracker, and Hootie and the Blowfish. Train released its self-titled debut album in early 1998 through Aware and Columbia and suddenly had a hit thanks to the strong radio play given to "Meet Virginia". They followed the platinum debut album with a double-platinum effort, Drops of Jupiter.

Train has since released the albums My Private Nation; For Me, It's You; and Save Me, San Francisco. The biggest hit they have had on the singles chart and market was released as a single for Save Me, San Francisco. "Hey, Soul Sister" reached number three on the Hot 100 and went quintuple-platinum in the United States and multi-platinum in international markets.
