 J Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on January 28, 1985. A military brat, he was born in Germany but his family quickly returned to the United States to grow up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. There he stayed, graduating from a local high school before choosing to attend St. John's University on an academic scholarship and graduating with great honors. He chose to attend the New York university to find greater opportunity to locate a record label willing to sign him. J Cole had been determined to pursue a career as a musician since he was a young teenager. From there, he made every effort to garner the attention of Jay-Z, failing to win over the superstar. Eventually Roc Nation called him back and he met his idol. A newly signed artist, he went to work courting attention with mixtapes, featured appearances on established artists' tracks, and tour appearances.
