The J. Geils Band originally formed as an American music group in 1967 in Worcester, Massachusetts. This band was highly acclaimed for its successful blues-rock/R&B-influenced sound in the 1970s followed by a more pop-influenced sound in the 1980s. This dazzling change in sound brought them MTV airplay and earned them 1982 international hit single "Centerfold".
The band sprouted as an acoustic blues trio in the mid 1960s with efforts of young musicians like singer and guitarist Jerome Geils, bassist Danny Klein and harpist Richard Salwitz. Initially, the band was formed under the name Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels whereas Geils was attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In 1967, the band started playing electric guitar and bass with drummer Stephen Jo Bladd and fast-talking ex-disc jockey singer Peter Wolf. In 1968, band recruited one more member , Seth Justman joined as an organist, and the group signed to Atlantic Records in 1970.
The J. Geils Band was first broadcast with the live single "First I Look at the Purse", then enjoyed several hit singles in the 1970s. The most successful hit the group enjoyed was "Must Of Got Lost" in 1974. The band signed with EMI America Records in 1970she band was highly rated for their distinctive music and albums they gave until the release of the still under appreciated "Monkey Island"in 1977, followed by the more conventional, but still first-class,"Sanctuary" in 1978.

Artist Biography - J Geils Band
|
The group went on to rise once again in the early 1980s, first with the humorous "Love Stinks", then with their enormous success with the Freeze Frame album which included "Centerfold". This track peaked the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 for six weeks. Wolf left the group in 1983 to pursue a solo career not long after, over conflict about the music of band. The group recorded another new album "You're Gettin' Even While I'm Gettin' Odd" after leaving Wolf. Seth Justman handled most of the vocal duties of the future works after Wolf. The album couldn't sustain at the charts and became a flop. The band also toured in support of the album, but never again recorded anything new.
The group was not reunited with Wolf until 1999, but disappointing ticket sales made the group break up again. Wolf still tours frequently with his own backup band, and the rest of the Geils band members make occasional appearances. Since the the band has been semi-retired, Geils has been restoring sports cars in Massachusetts.
On May 22, 2006, the six original members gave a wonderful surprise to their fans with their reunion and for the first time they had all played together in over 20 years, at the occasion of bassist Danny Klein's 60th birthday party at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.
