Born on December 10, 1965, J Mascis has a birth name, Joseph Mascis. Mascis is a ,ulti-faceted American musician. He is best known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for Dinosaur Jr.. Besides singing he is also credited for being an occasional producer and film composer. Mascis spent his childhood in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he formed the short-lived hardcore group Deep Wound with his high school friends, Lou Barlow and Scott Helland in the early 1980s. Though Mascis began on drums, but moved to guitar when he decided to found Dinosaur Jr. together with bassist Barlow and drummer Patrick "Murph" Murphy in 1984. This band achieved national success in a very short time because of their mazing and catchy music. His vocals was often resembled with Neil Young whereas his guitar riffs were described as "monolithic." On asking about his songwriting strategy, Mascis told guitarcenter.com, "I just kind of jam around until I get something I like and then play that for a while. When I get enough parts for it, then I try to arrange it somehow so it makes sense. After I record it, I do the drums, guitar or something. I never really have the lyrics until the last minute."
After explelling Barlow out from Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, Mascis recorded many more Dinosaur Jr. albums until 1997, including the 1996 acoustic solo album "Martin & Me". In 1996, he appeared in a guest role in the movie "Grace of my Heart" and played a ballad and a Beach Boys-like song for the soundtrack. Then he produced albums with his newly formed band J Mascis and the Fog, in 2000. In April of 2005, Mascis reunited with Barlow and Murph, as the original trio of Dinosaur Jr., and kicked off a tour celebrating the re-release of first three albums of the group.
