The Jazz Mandolin Project is an innovative (as the name suggests), a jazz jam band which was formed in 1993. The group was formed in Burlington, Vermont, and was led by mandolinist Jamie Masefield. The jazz mandolin project went on to be formed in 1993 through a gig every month at The Last Elm Café, a popular coffee house in Vermont. Surprisingly there is only one single member in the group who can be said to be an actual member. This only concrete member of the band is the hugely popular Jamie Masefield, although the group has several musicians who tour regularly with the group. Some of these members are Scott Ritchie (on bass), Michael "Mad Dog" Mavridoglou (on trumpet and keyboards), Sean Dixon (on drums), Mark Guiliana (again on Drums), Dan Weiss (on drums), Jon Fishman (the well known former drummer for fellow Vermont jam band, Phish) and Michael O'brien (on bass). The jazz mandolin project has recorded 6 albums till date. They are audience friendly, and often allow audience recordings at the shows they feature in.
In the start, the jazz mandolin consisted of any jazz players who could come and play for a donation at the door. Year 2002 has been their biggest year. This was the year in which the Jazz Mandolin Project played debut concerts in far flung areas like Alaska and Japan in the month of August. This was followed by a host of festivals around the country. In year 2003 the group launched its own recording label by the name of Lenapee Records.
