Gonzales was born and raised in Brooklyn, surrounded by the spiced and varied sounds of Afro-Cuban music and jazz. These two influences would go on to have a huge influence in shaping the musical career of Gonzales. As a young boy, Gonzales found himself sifting through his father's jazz record collection and being moved by the sounds of jazz icons like Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. In school Gonzales continued to pursue his love for music and learned to play both the trumpet and the congas. Gonzales would complete his higher studies at New York College of Music as well as New York University before heading out to pursue his music full time.
Gonzales has a very strong idea of Latin Jazz and the fusion of the different styles and elements that go into this vibrant genre. He has often stated that New York City contains the elements of a number of different places and cultures. It is a rare place that has the elements of Africa, The Caribbean, South America and North America reflected in its music. The sphere of musical influences on Gonzales' career expanded as he experienced the music of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri and Mongo Santamaria. He began his career as both a conga player and a trumpet player and soon was making his brand of Latin jazz known all around the world. He worked with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, who encouraged him to work towards fusing African rhythms with the elements of jazz.

After playing for a while with Eddie Palmieri's band Gonzales decided to form his own band. The first one was called Ya Yo Me Cure and they released an album of the same name which was moderately successful. But it was only with this second band, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band that the world really began to sit up and take notice. Their hit album called Rumba Para Monk was a huge success and won the band the Jazz Record of the Year award from the French Academie du Jazz.
