Artist Biography - Joao Gilberto
|
Joao Gilberto is considered the father of the Brazilian form of music the Bossa Nova. He was born on July 10th 1931 in the city of Juazeiro, Bahia in Brazil. Gilberto managed to transform the way people sing and play the guitar in Brazil, affecting popular culture in a big way.
His father was a businessman and a strict disciplinarian. He insisted that each of his seven children get good education. He was successful with six of them. The exception was the most intelligent child: Joao Gilberto, who from an early age was interested in only one thingmusic.
When Joao was fourteen, his bohemian godfather gave him a guitar that soon became an extension of his body. Having grown up among musicians, he formed the band 'Enamorados do Ritmo', by the age of fifteen. When he was 18, Joao was working at a local radio station called Radio Sociedade da Bahia in Salvador.
A self-taught guitarist and singer, Gilberto moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1950 and joined the vocal group Garotos da Lua as their lead singer. After a year and a half, he was kicked out of the group for his lack of discipline.
It was during this time that Joao Gilberto dedicated himself to improving his guitar playing technique. The result of his obsessive experiments was a completely new music style which became known as Bossa Nova.
Bossa Nova is a more refined version of the Samba. Gilberto did away with all the percussion and drums completely and relied only on his guitar which he used as a percussion instrument as well. The singing style developed by Gilberto was almost whispering and without vibrato.
On his return to Rio de Janeiro, he fought the popular and loud culture at that time to present his novelty sound and music. In March 1959 Joao had his first album released, 'Chega de Saudade', followed by another two albums in the coming years.
After revolutionizing Brazilian music, Joao Gilberto's sound reached jazz musicians. American musicians touring in Brazil brought Joao's recordings back to the US where the albums were playlisted on radio stations aimed at jazz enthusiasts. By the end of 1961 the album 'Brazil's Brilliant Joao Gilberto' was released in the US.
