Joey and Rory is the country duo who have burst onto the scene in 2008 after competing in the first season the CMT music competition, Can You Duet. Joey Martin Feek and Rory Lee Feek (husband and wife) fell short of winning the competition, coming in third. Like so many who have fallen short in music competitions, they have outlasted the actual winner (Caitlin Lynn and William Snyder in this case). Joey and Rory tickets continue to sell to see this couple as they tour the country playing their particular brand of country and bluegrass.
Before entering the reality show competition, Rory had been already been working as a songwriter in Nashville, the country capital of the world. She wrote songs for Clay Walker, Blake Shelton, and Jimmy Wayne. Joey had recorded a solo album for an independent record label. The competition allowed them to combine their skills as Joey and Rory, an opportunity that resulted in a record deal with Sugar Hill Records, a well-known independent label that would eventually be purchased by major label Vanguard Records.
The duo's debut effort, The Life of a Song, came out on October 28, 2008 and debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. Rolling out an album so soon after the show, Joey and Rory were able to remain fresh in the memories of country fans. The album even peaked at number 61 on the Billboard 200 that year. The album also owed much of its success to the single "Cheater, Cheater". The single was a cover of a song performed by the country duo Bombshel and co-written by Rory Feek.
