Born on October 19, 1945 in Rochester, New York, Lithgow was raised in a film and acting environment. Lithgow's mother, Sarah Jane Price, was an actress and his father Arthur Washington Lithgow was a theatrical producer and director. Lithgow did his graduation from the Harvard University in 1967. He became an actor what he says by accident. He says a performance at Harvard of Gilbert and Sullivan's Utopia Limited made him decide to be an actor.
In 1973, Lithgow debuted on Broadway in David Storey's "The Changing Room". He received a Tony Award as "Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic)" for his role in it. Since that appearance, Lithgow has appeared in 18 Broadway shows. Some notable among them are "Comedians", "Anna Christie", "Spokesong", "Bedroom Farce", "Beyond Therapy", "Once in a Lifetime", "Requiem for a Heavyweight", "The Front Page and M. Butterfly". He won his second Tony for musical "Sweet Smell of Success".

Lithgow has appeared in more than 30 films. In 1983 and 1984, he was nominated for Oscars for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Roberta Muldoon in "The World According to Garp" and Sam Burns in "Terms of Endearment". Some of his other films are in "Twilight Zone: The Movie", "Footloose", "Harry and the Hendersons", "Buckaroo Banzai", "Cliffhanger", "A Civil Action", "Raising Cain" and "Shrek".
He has been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards for his various TV shows. He won four of them, three -- in 1996, 1997, and 1999 -- for his role as Dick Solomon on the NBC's hit comedy series "3rd Rock From the Sun", which also brought him a Golden Globe, the American Comedy Award and two SAG Awards. He won a Primetime Emmy Award in "Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series" for his role in an episode of the "Amazing Stories".
Lithgow released his first album "Singin' in the Bathtub" in 1999. In June of 2002, he released his second children's album "Farkle and Friends", a musical companion to his book "The Remarkable Farkle McBride". In August of 2006, Lithgow released his third album "The Sunny Side of the Street". He has also written five best-selling books. Besides he performs concerts.
