Born on October 4, 1962, in Havana, Cuba, he grew up in the suburbs of Miami, Florida. When he was nine-year old his parents had shifted to the United States. Secada discovered his gift for music when he was into his teen. He was exposed to many different sounds like salsa, merengue and tropical rhythms while growing up in the culturally diverse city of Miami.
But Secada developed a passion for R&B and Pop. His music became a fusion of different sounds. With a bit of funk, soul and undertones of Latin percussion, he has accomplished a unique and striking sound. He was inspired and influenced by musical moguls like Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel and Marvin Gaye.
After completing graduation from Hialeah High School, Secada admitted to the University of Miami and completed a Bachelor's degree in Music and a Master's degree in Jazz Vocal Performance. While in the university, he became an accomplished jazz musician. Simultaneously, he was developing his skills as a songwriter.
In late 1980s, Secada met Gloria and Emilio Estefan. And soon he was offered to join Gloria's band as a background singer. The group realized his potential and then he became a valuable addition to the band. He also during that time, started composing music. Secada co-wrote and sang background of "Coming Out of the Dark." The song was Gloria's number one hit from her 1991 album "Into the Light".

During Gloria's "Coming Out of the Dark" tour, Secada was provided the life-changing opportunity where he took over the stage and performed solo. The crowd loved him and his career then took off into a solo act. His self-titled debut album "Jon Secada" (SBK/EMI) was released in 1992 and his career as male vocalist was skyrocketed. More than six million copies were sold worldwide and became triple platinum in the US. It reached No. 15 among America's Billboard Pop albums. The Spanish-language version of the album, "Otro Dia Mas Sin Verte" (EMI-Latin), became the No. 1 Latin album that year and earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
In 1994, Secada released his second album, "Heart Soul and Voice". It featured The Miami Sound Machine members. Also, guests Arturo Sandoval contributed in trumpet and Betty Wright in background vocals in the album. The album recorded platinum in the US.
Secada's third album on EMI, Amor, released in 1995, earned him second Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance. More than 20 million albums were sold worldwide.
He has also contributed to the recent careers of many successful artists. He co-wrote the song "Bella," the Spanish version of "She's All I Ever Had," for Ricky Martin's multi-platinum self-titled album of 1999. Secada also co-wrote and co-produced the song "Baila" for Jennifer Lopez, which appeared on "On the Six", her 1999 multi-platinum album. He worked with Mandy Moore on two of her songs, "One Sided" and "It Only Took a Minute" on her self-titled multi-platinum album. He is currently working on a duet with Diva Lilian Garcia and co-writing several songs for her upcoming album, scheduled to be released in early 2007. Book your tickets for his show.
