Prior to 2007, the only people who knew Juan Velez could sing were his family and friends. That year he entered Objetivo Fama, a Puerto Rican singing talent competition and won. Suddenly his star ascended quickly, as Juan Velez tickets sold and he became a household name outside of his hometown (Coamo, Puerto Rico).
The young singer (born August 2, 1983) won the competition by surviving 14 weeks and winning with 40.59 percent of the vote for his rendition of "Te Sigo Amando" by Juan Gabriel and his performance of "Devuelveme la Vida" with Antonio Orozco. The win led to a record contract with Univision Records.
