Hartwig Eichberg is the one who, currently, directs the Jubilee Singers. He is a concert pianist with an ear for perfection, beauty and a passion for the Spirituals. These Spirituals are kept in a traditional style, as gathered from relatives, friends and neighbors who remembered the oral tradition of music that was born out f plantation life in the Old South. The Jubilee Singers are a group of cappella choral that is dedicated to sharing the beautiful harmonies as well as stirring emotions of the original African-American Spirituals.
It was in the year 1871, when Geoff L. White, a school treasurer and music teacher, hoping to raise funds for Fisk University, borrowed money and set out with nine student singers for a tour in spite of the university's approval. Facing hardships and indignities, this nameless and almost penniless group planned going abroad to raise money to save their school from bankruptcy and closure. The singers ranged in the age from fifteen to twenty-five years and all of them were the former slaves or children of slaves. At first they were unsuccessful financially, so the group abandoned its classical, popular repertoire for powerful, spirituals that will move the audiences as well as slave songs. The group then named themselves as Jubilee Singers. The name was adopted from the bible, that referred to the time of jubilee and freeing of all slaves. Although Geoff White was without any musical training, still he sang well, was a gifted singer and was dedicated to music and had the talent of getting the utmost from his gifted singers. As a result the Jubilee Singers were able to impress the audience with their music that was entrancing and inspiring.
