On January 4, 1982 Carol Ann Hunter Earle gave birth to Justin Townes Earle. She and his father, famed musician and activist Steve Earle, named the boy after legendary country songwriter Townes Van Zadt. Justin Townes Earle inherited his father's gift for music and his namesake's gift fro writing moving ballads. However, he also developed deep personal demons, becoming addicted to drugs by the end of the 1990s. The addiction became so bad he lost his spot on his father's touring band.
He eventually found his way and signed with Bloodshot Records, an independent record label based out of Chicago. He released his debut album in 7. Yuma did not chart nor did it sell particularly well, but it did announce his arrival as a solo artist. He followed Yuma up with The Good Life in 2008, Midnight at the Movies in 2009, and most recently with Harlem River Blues. He earned a nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year from the Americana Music Awards in 2008 and won the same award in 2009.
