Before long, he came back to Texas and settled in Austin. There he became a member of the hard rock band Dangerous Toys. This band is known for its rough sound and oftentimes humorous lyrics. The stint at Dangerous Toys was an eye opener for Fowler. He learned many things while being a member of this band which was started in 1987. After a no-so-stint he left this band. Eventually, this band was disbanded at the turn of the millennium.

Fowler then floated his own Southern hard rock band christened Thunderfoot. As a rock singer he didn't taste much success. Ultimately he decided to give up hard rock for country music. The shift was a difficult decision to take. But after all country music was in his blood. It was the style of music he grew up with.
In 1998, Fowler put together a country band and soon began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Two years latter, he was able to record albums. His self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo came in 2000. It was a huge success. It did well enough to sell around 30,000 copies in the Texas area. The album title track was most popular and was regularly played on the radio. It won't amount to exaggeration to say that the song became somewhat of a Texas anthem. Mark Chesnutt included this song in his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it.
In 2002 Fowler released his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson an American entertainer and songwriter, born and raised in Abbott, Texas and David Lee Garza.
In 2004 another album, Loose, Loud & Crazy was released on Equity Records. It was label co-founded by Clint Black, another neotraditional country music singer, producer, songwriter, and occasional actor.
