Before he emerged as the musical figure Kid Cudi, he attended high school in Cleveland where he explored his love of acting. By the end of his time there he began to pursue rapping after listening to The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest. He ended up leaving school, earning his GED, and studying film at the University of Toledo. That direction lasted a year before he dropped out and headed to New York to pursue his music career.
He worked at a clothing store while working on his music, eventually releasing A Kid Named Cudi. The mix tape impressed Kanye West, who signed him to his label, GOOD Music, in 2006. The signing justified the risks Kid Cudi took.
