Officially, the King's Singers performed their first song on May 1, 1968. Earlier King's Singer was called Schola Catorum Pro Musica Profana. At that time it was a group of 14 choral students. Out of these 14, three are of the original members of the King's Singers. Alastair Hume in the countertenor, Simon Carrington in the baritone, and Brian Kay as the bassist. The Schola Cantorum group did a private recording of some of the popular songs. The King's Singers first named their group Six Choral Scholars From King's College and then later changed it to King's Singers. When the band was formed there were only three singers Hume, Kay and Carrington, but later three more singers joined the band- Martin Lane, Neil Jenkins, and Richard Salter, who were also from the same college, King's College. However, the latter trio didn't stayed for a long time. They were later replaced by Nigel Perrin in countertenor, Alastair Thompson in tenor, and Anthony Holt in baritone. In 1968, the King's Singers got an invitation to perform at the London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the group did their debut performance in the Hall. Except for Holt and Perrin, all had already graduated . It was in the 1969, that Holt and Perrin finally graduated. Holt did his training in choral from the Christ's Church Oxford. The group established a kind of vocal style that were mixes of the madrigal-like singing, that were usually done in the earlier days, with a kind of barber shop quartet in such a manner that it indulges other more-modern American styles that are generally associated with groups like the Four Freshmen. They experiment with all kinds of music that ranges from the works of Janequin and Josquin Desprez, the broad range of music, to that of Gilbert and Sullivan, from Berio and Penderecki they took the Japanese songs and also included sacred to popular song.
Artist Biography - Kings Singers
This kind of music drew considerable attention from most parts of the world. In 1971, after creating a niche for themselves in England, they started with their first recording. They signed with By Appointment and released their first album in the same year, that was usually a collection of British folk songs. Then in 1972, they released their next album that was devoted to music from the last quarter of the Middle Ages. Since their initial efforts, were quite successful, they started recording quite regularly in the recording studio and releasing a number of titles every year. They were quite untiring in their efforts and by the the end of 2002, they had already made more than 60 recordings. These recordings are easily available or can be periodically availed through reissues.
It was in the year 1980, when some changes took place in the group, Alastair Thompson, Nigel Perrin, and Brian Kay left the band and was replaced by Jeremy Jackman, Robert Chilcott, and Colin Mason. But this departure had nothing to do with internal problems or artistic decline, the trio left because of their own personal problems that had nothing to do with the band. Even after the changes, there was no decline in the popularity of the group, instead it increased further. They conducted heavy touring and also appeared in a televised show, Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. In 1985 they released their album All at Once Well Met: English Madrigals, it was quite a hit. In 1986, they released Beatles Connection and this too achieved impressive sales. In spite of personnel changes and ever-increasing repertory, the band has been growing ever since its inception. They are also making concert appearances with many famous singers and artists, such as Domingo and Te Okinawan and also drawing inspiration from the leading composers such as Richard Rodney Bennett, Exegetic, and Maxwell Davies. In 1997, some of the members of the group left and as a result none from the original group remained. They, then signed a contract with BMG Classics in the 1999. In 2003 , they signed up a new agreement with the independent British label lignum. This change is also an indication of the distinct upturn in the quality of the recorded efforts.
Now the the group members of the King's Singers consists of Robin Tyson in countertenor, David Hurley in countertenor, Paul Phoenix in tenor, Christopher Gabbitas in baritone, Philip Lawson in baritone, and Stephen Connolly in bass. Although the original members have left, but King's Singers are still ruling the world with their voice. They still remains one of the best ever known cappella groups.
