Today, Kodô is regarded as one of the chosen taiko drumming groups. This elite drumming group belongs to Sado Island, Japan. They have revived taiko drumming to a great extent after World War II, in Japan as well as abroad. They do continuous touring to Japan and the United States.
Though the prime performance of the concert is taiko drumming, Kodo also performs traditional Japanese musical instruments like fue and shamisen. In addition to these, they also perform traditional dance and vocal acts. Kodo perform pieces of their acts and dances which are based on the traditional rhythms of regional Japan. They execute beautifully composed pieces for Kodo by contemporary songwriters. Some of the pieces are composed by Kodo members too. The numbers of pieces can vary with every concert. The duration of the concert is about one hour and forty minutes.

The meaning of the word "KODO" in japan have two meaning, one is "heartbeat" which becomes the cardinal source of all rhythm another meaning can be "children of the drum", which reflects Kodo's desire to play their drums with a child's heart and feelings. Kodo put a special attempt to preserve as well as re-interpret traditional arts of Japan. Gaining lot of experience in music and performances from by touring worldwide, Kodo has refined Sado world. Their experience has made their performances and compositions more strong and influential. Other than giving individual performances of their group, they also associate with other artists and composers in many concerts.
Kodo was originated in 1981 and same year, their first performance was shown at the Berlin Festival. Since that time they have performed over 2800 times on all five continents including Europe, Japan, North and South Americas, Far East . They usually spend one third of the year in extensive touring overseas, a third touring in Japan and rest of the time in preparing new work and relaxing on Sado Island. Kodo Village was opened at 1988 and same year they performed wonderfully at 1st annual "Earth Celebration" international arts festival on Sado Island. In 1989, first "Kodo Juku" drum workshop was opened by Kodo.
In 1994, at 3rd International Visual Music Festival in Cannes, Kodo was awarded with MIDEM Music Video (Long Form) Award. Same year they received Japanese Foreign Ministry award. In 1997, Kodo Cultural Foundation was established. Kodo group established "Kodo Arts Sphere America" in North America in 2002. Kodo group has released many of its books too. Currently Kodo is holding various workshops nationwide and worldwide along with extensive touring. They are on "One earth Tour" presently and wonderfully winning the hearts of audience performing their skilled arts. The ambiance created in the concert gives a unique feeling.
