Brian Hoffman chose quite a character to pay homage to in Red Skelton. Red was an all encompassing entertainment personality. He began working in show business in 1937 and stopped in 1981, and is remembered fondly for his radio, television, film, and live performances. Of course, younger audiences will draw a blank when modern day funny men and women commemorate Red, but that does not mean they would not appreciate him with a little education.

Red Skelton began working as a clown. Yes, a clown. That led to performances on the vaudeville stage, on radio, and in the movies. He created a cast of lovable characters that helped make him a nationally known name. Eventually television took over as the main entertainment medium and Red Skelton rightly decided to join the fledgling medium. This was not an instant success for Skelton. Injury from years of physically challenging bits had taken their toll and no one had quite figured out how to use television to consistently entertain. Red stuck around and found the right path and topped the ratings in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
