Laurie Berkner
Background- Her music is loved by children world over. She is an accomplished singer as well as a bassist.
A famous musician who has made music only for children, Laurie Berkner plays guitar and is the lead singer in the Laurie Berkner Band along with pianist Susie Lampert and bassist Brian Mueller. Mueller is Berkner's husband.
Laurie Berkner was born in the year 1967 in Princeton, New Jersey. She has grown up in Princeton. Since she was inclined to music from childhood onwards, she started getting involved in choirs, bands and musical theater. While she was a student at Rutgers University, she used to toure Europe as a choir soloist and an orchestral guitar player. After that she started working as a music counselor in summer-camp. Eventually, she also spent several years as a music specialist for children day care centers as well as preschools in and around New York.
From the year 1992, she started performing as a professional rock musician, in Lois Lane which was an all-female cover band. She then started a band "Red Onion" which played original music but, she found song-writing to be problematic, eventually it disappeared when she started writing children's music. As Berkner herself admits, "Writing music for kids has not been a struggle at all. The more I started working on material for children, the more I realized that it opened up creativity in me that I never knew I had."

In the year 1997, she started working with Mueller and Lampert, and with them she released her first album, "Whaddaya Think of That?". Her album became so popular the was encouraged to record by the parents of the children she worked with. "The children were really responding to the music we created together," she said. This album contained some original songs like "We Are the Dinosaurs" and "I Know a Chicken", which came with covers of classics like "The Cat Came Back" and "Wimoweh (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)".
In the year1998, she formed her own independent record company, "Two Tomatoes Records", and released her second album, "Buzz Buzz", which includes some outstanding songs such as "Pig on Her Head" and "Monster Boogie". In the year 1999 she released her next album "Victor Vito". This album was a great hit and it made her famous in the international level. With these release, she also started appearing on the FX network's American Baby Show and also won a Parent's Guide To Children's Media Award. Her latest album "Under a Shady Tree", was released in the year 2002.
What's more, Berkner has also released a video and a DVD, and has also authored a children's book, "Victor Vito and Freddie Vasco". The book is based on her song "Victor Vito". She appears regularly on Noggin which is a television network aimed at children, also appears in music videos played between programs and on the program Jack's Big Music Show. She has also appeared in Jamarama Live! which is a touring music festival for children that was sponsored by Noggin.
