She was born on February 17, 1957 and raised in Canada to a nurse and livestock dealer. Her passion for Celtic music developed after her early wishes to be a veterinarian. Loreena McKennitt learned to play the Celtic harp and soon took to the street, busking throughout the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto to earn enough money to record her first album. That album, Elemental, was released on her personal label, Qu8inlan Road.

Her first three albums would fall upon deaf ears, but she achieved a breakthrough in 1991. Loreena McKennitt recorded and released the Visit through her label and Warner Brothers. The album reached number 28 on the Canadian charts, eventually being certified platinum four times in home land and gold in the United States. Her albums since have regularly reached platinum in Canada. Her most successful album in the United States is The Book of Secrets (1997), her sixth album and only to reach platinum in the U.S.
