The Lovin Spoonful got some additional publicity when they were identified originally to perform in a television show that eventually became "The Monkees". Woody Allen's maiden venture, feature film - What's Up, Tiger Lily carried their music too.
In 1967, not only their album "You're a Big Boy Now" was released but also one of their group members, from the band! Lovin Spoonful came under a major drug bust during that time and Yanovsky was exposed of his possession of controlled substance. A Canadian citizen, Yanovsky was put under pressure to name the source, and eventually turned the atmosphere sour, when he did so fearing denial of re-entry to United States. He had to depart on that note and was replaced by Jerry Yester, hailing from the Modern Folk Quartet. Though the group saw some more moderate hits, the last straw was the exit of their lead artist John Sebastian, in 1968. He quit the band to pursue solo opportunities and found just lukewarm success as songwriter / solo artist. Lovin spoonful had to stop after their album Revolution '69.
However, some signs of resurgence appeared in the late 1990s when a favorable climate was created by the release of the film "Die Hard: With a Vengeance" which featured their hit – "Summer in the City" and their addition to the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 2000. But those factors did not resurrect the band's majesty of their heyday.

Who would want to be dominated by others especially if it comes to the field of music and arts where talent calls the shots and success is not anybody's specific privilege? Prompted by such an ideology, a group of four, challenged the British Invasion of music that was prevalent in Unites States during the mid 1960s. Their subsequent success was not just based on their rebelling attitude but also their own talent in music. Those four were Steve Boone and Joe Butler, from Long Island and, John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky from Greenwich Village. Thus was born Lovin Spoonful, the band that they put together, which went on to carve its place in the folk-rock music arena.
Son of an accomplished harmonica player himself, John Sebastian, who donned the leadership role of the troupe, had already been doing some folk rock acts with the group – The Mugwumps, in coffee shops and small clubs. Jon Sebastian split from that group to float Lovin Spoonful and so did a few others to launch another band called the Mamas and the Papas. The experience of John combined with the abilities of Steve on bass and Joe on drums resulted in a winning combination. They subsequently signed up with Kama Sutra and found their "Do You Believe in Magic?" in the Top Ten in the year 1965. Blending the best of rock and roll, Lovin Spoonful continued to perform across the country with their "Nashville Cats" especially topping the charts. They found a place in Billboard Hot 100 with "Summer in the City", their greatest single. Much more than their contemporary and competitor, the Byrds, they offered a cheery music, which they termed as "Good Time Music" as displayed in "Summer in the City". But, on the other hand, their glorious singles lacked in innovation and depth in comparison to the Byrds.
