Garfield introduced him to the Italian-American Disco band 'Change' , he dabbled as a feature writer and had a few hits in 1980, of which he sang 'Searching' (written by Malavasi) and 'the Glow of Love' (written by Davide Romani, Mauro Malavasi and Wane K. Garfield) amongst others like 'A Lover's holiday' (Davide Romani). From here, there was no stopping Luther. Luther 'Ronzoni' Vandross was born on April 20, 1951 in Manhattan's Lower East side,the youngest in the family. When the doctor who delivered him asked his mother for his middle name, his mother exclaimed 'Ronzoni' on sighting a packet of 'Ronzoni' spaghetti on the bedside table. His mother, a nurse, made sure there was music especially, R & B, Gospel, Soul and Doowop, even after his father's death when Luther was only 8. at 13, he realized his calling when he heard Dionne Warwick's 'Anyone who had a heart', which he would cover later. Following his elder sister's, Patricia who was in 'The Crests', a Doowop band, he created his own school singing group 'Listen My Brother' and began writing and composing.
He made his show-biz breakthrough with 'Everybody rejoice(can you feel a brand new day)' which was used in 'Wiz', a Broadway musical. In 1974, he co-wrote 'Fascination' for David Bowie's 'Young Americans' and later toured went on tour with him. Initially, he remained behind the spotlight on backup and producer's duties for artistes like Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon, Donna Summer, Chic and Barbara Streisand. He formed a group, 'Luther' on Cotillion records, had a successful single 'It's good for the soul' although their two albums, 'Luther'(1976) and 'This close to you'(197) were not successful.
Luther had his own perspective on his place in pop history. 'I'd like to be remembered as a premier singer of songs,' he offered, 'not just a popular act of a given period.' And that he will be.
