Mae Carol Jemison
In 1987, Dr. Jemison applied and got selected for the NASA's astronaut program. After joining NASA, she worked on several intricate assignments – launch support activities at the Kennedy Space Center; verification of Shuttle computer software; Science Support Group activities. On September 12, 1992, she went into the earth's orbit aboard Endeavour as the science mission specialist. She spent 190 hours, 30 minutes, 20 seconds in space and worked as co-investigator on the bone cell research experiment. After a highly successful tenure at NASA, Dr. Jemison resigned in 1993.
After quitting NASA, Dr. Jemison set up ‘The Jemison Group, Inc.' in Houstan with the aim of developing and implementing technologies that could cater effectively to the needs of people in the developing countries. From 1995 to 2002, she worked as the Director of the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries. Dr. Jemison got an appointment as Professor at Cornell University. She also appeared in the PBS documentary African American Lives. Mae Carol Jemison has worked as Medical Practitioner/Researcher, Computer Engineer/Researcher, Area Peace Corps Medical Officer, professor in the Environmental Studies Program and at Cornell University; and above all this she has also had a stint with Nasa from 1987 to 1993. Her most significant achievement was, however, space traveling aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. She spent about eight days in the orbit and conducted various experiments there. She is a winner of several prestigious awards and a member of several renowned organizations. Mae Carol Jemison's list of achievements is incredibly long. This exceptional genius has an aura that attracts multitudes to her who want to learn from her exceptional genius and vast experience. Born on 17 October 1956 in Alabama, Mae Carol Jemison's family moved to Chicago when she was only 3 years old. Shortly after graduating from Morgan Park High School in 1973, Jemison won a scholarship and joined Stanford University. She completed her B.S. in chemical engineering from Stanford in 1977 and, thereafter, obtained her M.D. in 1981. In 1983, Dr. Jemison was appointed as the area Peace Corps medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia. She worked on several research projects like Hepatitis B vaccine, schistosomiasis etc. Back in U.S.A., she enrolled for CIGNA Health Plans and commenced working as a general practitioner.
