Pianist, singer and a well known songwriter Marcia Ball was born on March 20, 1949 in Texas. She was brought up in Louisiana. Marcia is famous for her wonderful mixing of rock and blues. Grown up in musical surroundings, she started playing Piano at a very young age of 5 only. Her interest reflected towards New Orleans style piano playing which was exemplified by Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, and James Booker. She formed a progressive country band "Freda and the Firedogs"in 1970 in Austin, Texas. But she quit the project and started her solo career in 1974.
In late 1960's, Marcia went for higher studies in Louisiana State University as an English major. She played for psychedelic rock & roll band "Gum" in college. Once she and her husband headed for San Francisco but due to some problem in car, they stayed with one of their former band mate in Austin. They were so impressed by Austin's music, sights and food that they decided to stay there only. Since that time, Ball has been staying in Austin only.
Her piano style combines elements of boogie woogie with zydeco and Louisiana swamp rock. Some of her best recordings have been recorded for the Rounder label. These recordings include "Soulful Dress" in 1983, "Hot Tamale Baby" in 1985, "Gatorhythms" in 1989, and "Blue House" in 1994. One of her notable contribution is "Dreams Come True" made in 1990, which was recorded with Angela Strehli and Lou Ann Barton on Antone. She is top class and well educated businesswomen who is aware of all business realities. She never go for recording until she gets a good collection of quality songs. She is a superb songwriter which can be noticed from many of his songs . Most of her songs has been written by her. Marcia was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in 1990.

In her own words what Marcia says in one of her interview in 1994, "the songwriting process is the most fulfilling part of the whole deal for me, so I always keep my ears and eyes open for things I might hear or see....I like my songs to go back to blues in some fashion". Reckoning herself still a learner, some of Marcia's albums include covers of material by Joe Ely, Clifton Chenier, O.V. Wright, Dr. John and Shirley & Lee.
Her last discs under the banner of Rounder Records came in the late '90s which included "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" in 1997 and "Sing It!" in 1998. In "Sing It", Ball has been featured with Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson where they have employed solo as well as combined vim. This musical energy evoked a great exposure for all of them. The music was so fantastic that this was nominated for both a Grammy and a W.C. Handy Blues Award as Best Contemporary Blues Album. Meanwhile she signed a deal with Alligator Records in 2000 when the two releases were reaching the heights of popularity. She released her album "Presumes Innocent" for new label in 2001. Though she is quite famous as an influential player in both New Orleans and Austin in clubs scenes, she frequently performs at festivals and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Later in 2003, she came up with "So Many Rivers" which was followed by a Live album " Down the Road" in 2005.
