Sapp grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he spent his formative years dedicated to singing in the church. His big career break came in 1991 when he was asked to join a popular gospel rap group, Commissioned, at the age of 23. In 1995 his self-titled release earned him acclaim in the gospel genre, but it would take 12 years before Marvin Sapp achieved cross over appeal. The 2007 album Thirsty featured the song "Never Would Have Made It," which peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Charts and number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.
