Melissa Etheridge is the iconic singer most often remembered as an outspoken rockstar and folk singer in the 1990s. She was born in 1961 in Leavenworth , Kansas, the progeny of a high school psychology teacher and a computer consultant. Melissa Etheridge's future seemed certain from the beginning. By the time she was eight she had began learning the guitar. By her teenage years she was performing with with all male country groups. In high school she joined the musical and dance team. So, her acceptance to the Berklee School of Music in Boston should have shocked no one who knew her.

Berklee is a rare school, a college teaching the basics of the modern music business and modern genres. Many of its students leave before graduating to pursue the life of a musician. Melissa Etheridge became one of those students after three semesters. She had enough of the coffee houses in Boston and went West, landing in Los Angeles. There she explored her sexuality and played well enough to impress Bill Leopold, a music manager. By 1988 she had released a self-titled debut album and earned a Grammy nomination for the song "Bring Me Some Water."
