Mendel
In 1865, Gregor Mendel reported the results of hybridizing experiments on plants and laid out the basic laws of inheritance more comprehensively that ever before. He offered insightful sketch of how physical traits were passed from one generation to the next in the plants. This work was ignored until the turn of the twentieth century. Later it was rediscovered and confirmed by other researchers.
However, Mendel has come to be seen as the father of genetics. The complete story of how he accomplished what he did remains relatively unknown today. "Gregor Mendel: Planting the Seeds of Genetics" is the exhibition that celebrates his work and life. The foundation stone for Field Museum was laid on September 16 of 1893. The museum was incorporated with the purpose of "accumulation and dissemination of knowledge, and the preservation and exhibition of objects illustrating art, archaeology, science and history." The museum's name was changed to Field Museum of Natural History in the year 1905, to honor the museum's first benefactor, Marshall Field and also to reflect its focus on the natural science. In 1921 the museum was relocated from its original site in Jackson Park to its present location in Chicago Park District property which is near a lake front Meuseum Campus that includes the John G. Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. The merit of being so close to each other makes these three institutions the finest of their kind in the world and attracts maximum visitors annually than any other comparable site in Chicago. The Field Museum was incorporated to house the biological and anthropological collections gathered for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The were the core objectives of the Museum's collections which have increased world-wide expeditions, exchange, purchase, and gifts to more than twenty million specimens. The collections from the foundation of Museum's exhibition, research and educational programs are spread further and informed by world-class natural history library of more than 250,000 volumes.
