Once the group was formed the members started rehearsing and gave a performance that night. Soon after they released their self-titled album and became popular amongst their jazz fans and earned a lot of praise. Not only that their album went on to win the Best contemporary jazz album in the Juno award in 1988.
Soon after winning this award they started working on their second album- Metalwood 2 which again got them a Juno award. Their third album-Metalwood Live was released in 1999 followed by Metalwood 3 in the next year. Their album Recline was released in the spring of 2001.In a relatively short span of time this group has explored and given the audience a mix of rock, funk,R&B. Success becomes easier when the right people come together. This is the story of success behind this highly talented group with firm jazz roots.
Now let us get to know more about their albums:
Recline (2002): This album was less experimental compared to their previous releases. Still there was a good mix of hip and jazz centric improvisation. Brad Turner played well using the keyboard and the trumpet. Mike Murley used his saxophone sound to match the heavy grooving by bassist Chris Tarry and drummer Ian Froman.
Metalwood 3(2001): In this album Brad Turner, the keyboardist made use of acoustic piano for the first time. This was reflected in their numbers "Moonrocks" and the elegant "Will I Dream?" and "Mr. Willis.". The group also incorporated the drum and bass along with some hip-hop elements for" Isthmus of Drum," "Phone Home" and "Metalcode"which was a bonus remix.
Metalwood 2(1992): This album was more diverse both in its sound and composition than their previous albums. There was more use of keyboard textures particularly in the numbers like "Spesh, "Newton," and the grand finale "Darren vs. the Ants," "Easter Island." and a funky number called "Who's Bob?".
Metalwood (1997): This album was raw and nasty combined with some strong music compositions with Mike Murley on the saxophone, Brad Turner on keyboards and trumpet, Chris Tarry on electric bass with Ian Froman on drums. The tunes were loosely structured with some vintage flavour added to it.
The history of Metalwood can be traced back to 1996.The band comprises of 4 members with Mike Murley (saxophonist), Chris Tarry (bassist), Brad Turner (keyboardist and trumpeter),Ian Froman (Drummer). The band first came together via a series of chance meetings. First Murley and Turner met each other in a summer Jazz camp which was in Boston. Meanwhile Tarry and Froman met each other and they ran across Murley when they were performing at a jazz festival.
Each one belonged to a different geographical location right from New York, Boston, Vancouver and Toronto. Inpite of the cultural differences they mixed with each other well and this led to the formation of their band "metalwood".
