Artist Biography - Michael Mcdermott
|
Born and based in the windy city of Chicago, Michael McDermott has been breezing through the music scenes since the early 1990s. He creates and sings such songs that never fail to capture our own triumphs, insecurities and hopes for reclamation. Initially, a proponent of rock, he also mixed a folk flavor to it in the right proportion in his songs. That rootsy folk-rock style of his earned him the distinction of he shaping up as the next Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen.
Michael went to college for graduation, but his affinity to music compelled him to detour and he started to play in Chicago's famous coffeehouses and bars. He was a regular performer in the famous pub - Harrington. And soon, the most inexpensive and effective medium for publicity – the word of mouth, did the trick and brought him in contact with SBK to sign the first contract of his career. 620 W. Surf was his first album and hit the music audience in 1991. It opened on a good note as far as the early recognition is concerned, thanks to the hit single "A Wall I Must Climb". In the years that came after, he released two other popular albums Gethsemane (1994) and Michael McDermott (1996) signing with Giant/Warner and SBK/EMI. Though the combined sales of his three works touched a hundred thousand, he chose to do it on his own, going forward. Bourbon Blue (1999) was it, his first independent album. The album not only did strike the right note with the audience but also fell on right ears. Koch records was drawn towards McDermott and their alliance saw the release of his next album Last Chance Lounge in 2000. It won rave reviews in some of the popular newspapers and also landed in the film "Knockaround Guys". That year, the fans of WXRT Radio Chicago bumped Michael to their Top Ten for 2000 with Last Chance Lounge being the Best Album, and "Junkie Girl", the best song.
