Milton Nascimento had gained tremendous reputation on national charts within Brazil with his Clube da Esquina works, however, Nascimento's international breakthrough came into existence after his appearance on jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter's 1974 album Native Dancer. Milton Nascimento was born on October 26, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A renowned singer-songwriter by profession, he is considered as one of the leading icons of Brazilian Music. He had a tough childhood as his mother was a maid, Maria do Carmo Nascimento. He was adopted by a family for whom his mother worked when he was a few months old. He looked never back after it as the couple Josino Brito Campos who was a banker, mathematics teacher and electronic technician and Lília Silva Campos who happened to be a music teacher guided him all along.
He passed his childhood in Laranjeiras and Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. He received another jerk when he was 18 months old as his biological mother passed away. He then moved with his adoptive parents to Três Pontas in the State of Minas Gerais.
During the nascent days of his career, Nascimento played an active role in Evolussamba and Sambacana, the two samba groups. He moved to Belo Horizonte in 1963. His strong friendship with Borges brothers led to the Clube da Esquina, that is, a ‘corner club', movement. The other members of the club included Beto Guedes, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, and Flávio Venturini.
What made Nascimento famous was his chime-clear falsetto with a tonal range. Then his highly acclaimed and widely popular songs like "Canção da América" (Song from America) and "Coração de Estudante" (Student's Heart) made him a hero. His lyrics were a part of a sad traumatic story and consequently, they became the part of the music fans' lives. For example, the lyrics of "Coração de Estudante" remember the funeral of the student Edson Luís, killed by police officers in 1968. The song became a hit in the nation. While it came up as a hymn for the diretas Já campaign in 1984, it was also played in the funeral of the late president Tancredo Neves the next year. The president had died before assuming the presidency.
