The Bobsleigh takes a team of men or women down a winding ice-laced half pipe in an aerodynamic sled that seems to reach the limits of the gravitational force human beings can withstand. The sport has a celebrated part of the Winter Olympics in 1924, and it remains a popular part of the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. The Bobsleigh began as a winter sport in a simple spa town in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The story goes that a local hotel owner Caspar Badrutt lobbied for English gentry to come to his hotel in the winter to avoid four months of overwhelming vacancies. The English men and women came down and began to take traditional sledding to new levels. First they started out with a pair of skeleton sleds attached by a board, but the winter sport took off until it became so popular that the raucous groups of sled riders nearly ran over the townspeople as they lived their daily lives on the streets of St. Moritz.

Badrutt wanted to keep the winter business going, but avoid hurting people. The result was the construction of a special course, the first half pipe. The informal sport of the new aristocracy of the 19th century became a formal competition in 1884 on that specially designed course, beginning the evolution of bobsleigh into an Olympic sport.
