Figure Skating has existed in some form since people first figured out how to skate on ice. As we know it, figure skating emerged in the middle of the 1800s. At the time the sport followed so called "English Rules" resulting in a sport that is far more formal than the modern sport. Figure Skating tickets have been available for the Olympics since joining the Olympics in the summer of 1908 before transferring to the very first Winter Olympics in 1924. The 2010 Winter Games promise to be as exciting as any competition in the recent years.

The sport rose to prominence in the early 20th century as the International Skating Union, European Championship, and World Championship gained traction. At first only men competed in these events, but in 1092 Madge Syers broke the gender barrier, placing second against a field of men. A women's field was almost immediately established and a few years later Pairs Skating held its first World Championship.

Perhaps the next biggest development for the sport of Figure Skating was the Cold War. The war had created a natural rivalry. The United States had been dominating along with Canada immediately after World War II, but a tragic airplane accident killed the entire U.S. figure skating team in 1960. Suddenly there was a void in the world of figure skating and the Soviet Union emerged as a power. Russia inherited the Soviet dominance once the Union fell.

The 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver will have 148 skaters competing in four events. The events feature two individual events, one for men and one for women, and two pair's events, with pairs and ice dancing.
