The Chicago Cubs finished the 2009 MLB baseball in second place in the NL Central with an 83-78 record. The record and the standings were a disappointment for Cubs fans, though they still purchased Chicago Cubs tickets to enjoy a nice summer day out in the bleachers at Wrigley Field. Fans question whether the sale of the team, which seemed imminent at the beginning of the season, or the Milton Bradley-experiment was the true cause of the catastrophic season.

The winter following the season finally brought about some finality of the issues that loomed overhead in the 2009 season. Tom Rickets is firmly in place as the owner, Milton Bradley was traded, and it was announced that Andre Dawson would be entering the Cooperstown (though not as a Chicago Cub).

Chicago also made a few moves with actual players that would be playing for the team in the 2010 baseball season. They signed Marlon Byrd to a three-year contract to play center field and picked up Xavier Nady as a possible right fielder or fourth outfielder for a year. Nady suffered though an injury and could make a huge comeback this season, which would make the Cubs incredibly happy.

The Cubs enter the season with an incredible starting rotation. Carlos Zambrano is the staff ace followed by Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, and Tom Gorzelanny (the young promising starter picked up from Pittsburgh last season). The infield has Geovany Soto coming into his third season as the Cubs starting catcher and looking to forget a terrible sophomore season after winning the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year award. Derrek Lee plays first, Mike Fontenot plays second, Ryan Theriot plays short, and Aramis Ramirez plays third. Lee and Ramirez are cornerstones of the offense as power hitters while Theriot could be a decent hitter and Fontenot is fan favorite.

The outfield looks like Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, and Kosuke Fukudome will start, though Nady could see some starting time in right. Soriano tormented fans with an awful season last year along with Fukudume. Byrd had a great season in Texas, so if every one of these players can make good on their promise or can have a comeback season this could be one of the most dangerous hitting groups in the National League.

The Chicago Cubs again look great on paper, so perhaps this year they can win their third NL Central title in four seasons and even get over that first round hump.
