He also needs Ian Davis should have a breakout season from the left side of the plate, Daniel Murphy has to be able to play both the field and take time at the plate. Heck, even David Wright needs to do more than simply provide great defense at the hot corner. Wright has never been quite the same player since 2009. He may have posted a high batting average or demonstrated a sudden burst of power, but Wright has not combined the two since. Last season, he failed on both accounts. This team was initially built to bring in the fans, signing popular players and managers from New York baseball team's past, but eventually the call became "next year". That next year came in 1969 with the Miracle Mets. The team surged in the last third of the season, winning 39 of 50 games and eventually took the NL Eastm the NL Pennant, and the World Series. Starting pitcher Tom Seaver and center fielder Tommie Agee led the team to a long awaited victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The New York Mets struggled in the seasons that followed. The 1973 World Series appearance followed an underwhelming 82-79 season that somehow landed the top spot in the division. The team surprised everyone by beating the Reds and then took the Athletics to seven games before losing. Mets tickets were once again baseball tickets to see a team struggle until the middle of the 1980s. Led by players like Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Gary Carter, Len Dykstra, Bob Ojeda, and Ray Knight, the New York Mets took the NL East and beat the Houston Astros in six games in the NLCS and beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games in the World Series. New York competed for the rest of the 1980s. The Mets were very good in the 1990s too, but the Yankees were great. The 21st century has been challenging. Third baseman David Wright has been pegged as the franchise's corner stone and Jason Bay has been signed as a hired gun, but the team has struggled to make good on its promise.
