Pittsburgh Pirates Tickets
The 2011 Pirates are still struggling on offense but they may be putting together quite a pitching staff. Pittsburgh is scoring just the 27th most (or fourth fewest) runs in the league and that number is appropriate. They have the fourth worst batting average, the eighth worst on base percentage and seventh worst slugging percentage. The pitching staff has a decent team ERA (15th in the MLB) with the 19th most quality starts, sixth-worst WHIP and has held the opponent to the 18th lowest batting average.
Pittsburgh best hitters are third-year second baseman Neil Walker and second-year center fielder Andrew McCutchen. The initial reaction is to get excited over the descriptions "third year" and "second year", but that is before seeing the actual stats. Walker is leading the Pirates in hitting at .279 and has the best OBP among everyday starters at .353. McCutchen is the power hitter of the bunch with 8 homeruns, but he also has a .241 batting average and .333 OBP. McCutchen has also been benched for a lack of hustle. Those are not great stats, though it may not be a bad thing for those two young players to be the face of the offense.
Pittsburgh has a decent starting rotation. Charlie Morton is the apparent ace. He is 5-1 with six quality starts in eight starts with a 2.62 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Morton's K/9 ratio is low at 4.75 so he will not be able to keep this up unless he increases his strikeouts. Meanwhile Jeff Karstens, Paul Maholm, and Kevin Correia have an ERA between 3.50 and 4.00. Karstens is not going to give anybody long innings though.
Heck, add a decent offense to that staff and this Pittsburg Pirates club could make a jump from fourth in the NL Central to possibly contending with the Reds and Cardinals. At least, that is what every fans with Pittsburgh Pirates tickets are telling themselves.

The Pirates lost to Boston that season, but they returned in 1909 and won their second appearance against the Detroit Tigers. The Pirates also captured titles in 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979. Of those teams, perhaps the most impressive team was the 1971 World Series team. That early 1970s roster won five NL East division titles from 1970 to 1975. That 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates team enjoyed a season in which left fielder Willie Stargell hit .295 with 48 homeruns and 125 RBI. First baseman Bob Robertson hit 26 homeruns and catcher Manny Sanguillen hit .319. The Pirates had a solid starting rotation. Steve Blass, Dock Ellis, Bob Johnson, Luke Walker, and Bob Morse are not future Hall of Fame players, but that season Blass won 15 games with a 2.85 ERA, Ellis won 19 games with a 3.06 ERA, Johnson won 9 games with a 3.45 ERA, Walker won 10 games with a 3.55 ERA, and Moose won 11 games with a 4.11 ERA. Pirates tickets were a surprise in 1979, the last World Series win, but Pittsburg showed signs of a bright future until the early 1990s. Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke, and Bobby Bonilla comprised one of the best young outfields in baseball. The Pittsburgh Pirates won three straight NL East division titles from 1990 to 1992, losing in the NLCS each time before free agency ended that future prematurely.
