Seattle Mariners Tickets The Seattle Mariners finished in last place in the AL West, bringing one the league's worst offenses and one of the best starting pitching staffs in the MLB to Safeco Field. Montero had a promising rookie season, one that seemed to justify all the buzz surrounding his arrival. The deal did not come to fruition and Cliff Lee went to the Rangers for a different slugger, Justin Smoak. Now the Seattle Mariners have once again traded away a valuable asset for hitter. In Montero and Smoak, there is a glimmer of hope the baseball team will increase its run production to such levels that it justifies the trade. The Mariners starting rotation has certainly been downgraded from the fourth best in the AL. Doug Fister was traded during the pennant race and Michael Pineda was traded over the winter. Now Felix Hernandez is the lone sure thing on the rotation. Jason Vargas steps up at number two, though at best he probably has middle of the rotation stuff. Hisashi Iwakuma is the latest big-name import from Japan. Iwakuma has been stellar over on the other side of the Pacific, but he arrives after shoulder surgery and with questionable velocity. The back end of the rotation is expected to include Blake Beavan and either Hector Noesi or Charlie Furbush.

This winning streak will have to begin on the mound, since it is unlikely the least-potent offense in MLB baseball during the 2011 season is going to serve as the catalyst, not unless the front office clones Ichiro Suzuki circa 2004. Instead the Seattle Mariners will have to lower its already 9th ranked 3.55 ERA and hope the offense can squeeze out enough runs to turn those spectacular performances into wins. Just how good has this pitching staff been? The Mariners arms have five starters with 15 or more starts with an ERA between 3.00 and 3.64, three between 3.00 and 3.38. These guys (Erik Bedard, Doug Fister, Felix Hernandez, and Michael Pineda) do not deserve to have 34 losses to just 24 wins between them.
