The Temple Square Chorale: The Temple Square Chorale was organized in 1999 in response to the invitation of President Gordon B. Hinckley to make this Choir better. It was introduced as in service for the existing members as well as became a training ground for new applicants to the Choir. In July 1999, the first session was introduced by Mack Wilberg as the Music director & Jerold Ottley, along with his wife, Joann Ottley, soloist and renowned teacher as the co-director of the training school.
Each year under the guidance of Wilberg and the Ottleys, the Choir conducts about two 12 week sessions per year. And it gives its members the privilege of focusing on the major Choral works which was not possible for them under the rigorous schedule at Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Some of the works presented by the Choir include: St. Matthew Passion by Bach, King David by Arthur Honegger, Requiem by Mozart and Saul by Handel.
Over a three month session period, the membership of the Temple Square Chorale changes. It gives a chance to the new applicants who have undergone a rigorous audition with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The audition consists of a detailed music aptitude exam along with recorded vocal tapes along with personal vocal auditions. Apart from that, Wilberg works with Craig Jessop, Music Director of the Choir to improve upon the musical skills of the existing members. There are usually about 70-80 members per session but the numbers do vary with every new session. After the three month session gets over usually there is a performance of a major choral work. Here the Temple square Chorale is accompanied by the members of the Orchestra at Temple Square.
The Orchestra at Temple Square: In order to strengthen the musical organization of the Church, an initiative was undertaken by the Church President Gordon B. Hinckley. This initiative led to the formation of the Orchestra at Temple square in the year 1999. Many well known instrumental groups like the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Utah have accompanied the Choir. The Orchestra at Temple Square has developed into a symphony orchestra and gained national recognition. It acts as a volunteer organization to both the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Temple Square Chorale. Most of the members of the Orchestra at Temple Square give their valuable time and service without any expectation of financial compensation.
The main responsibility of the members is to accompany Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They usually do it for some of the major television and radio broadcasts and in addition to this their responsibility is record the major musical projects. Just like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, it is a voluntary organization consisting of about 110 members. With the formation of this organization, a new dimension has emerged which has a great future for the music of the Church.
