No more LeBron James meant the Cavs turned to Baron Davis as its new star. Cleveland has quickly realized what much of the league already knew, Davis is no longer the player he used to be. The team holds an amnesty clause so they can let him go, but that may not be in the cards as the teams must reach a certain level, 85 percent, of the salary cap. Still, most of the Cleveland Cavs basketball fan base is rabid to fire Davis and remove two frustrating seasons and more than $28 million from the payroll. Luckily, the Cavs already have one possible piece to replace him in first round draft pick Kyrie Irving. The point guard is not as much a sure thing as one of the Memphis class. Irving is still a capable guard whose bottom seems to be Mike Conley and top seems to be Chris Paul. This is not a bad start and there is no reason to keep Davis on board when they can groom a future star. The Cavaliers schedule will also be a proving ground for rookie power forward Tristan Thompson. Thompson has the distinct advantage of being left handed, a big wingspan, and has a knack for swatting shots from the weakside. Antawn Jamison could be a valuable mentor in his final season under contract, whether he is traded close to the trade deadline or plays the entire season at Quicken Loans Arena.

 The Cleveland Cavaliers have been playing in the NBA since 1970 and the basketball franchise has been in search of its first title ever since. That first decade the team struggled with players like Austin Carr, Jim Brewer, and Jim Cleamons on the roster. They may have finished first in the Central Division and second in the Eastern Conference, but they struggled to produce a winning record for much of those first 10 years. This difficult growth period extended well into the 1980s until guard Mark Price, guard Ron Harper, forward John Williams, forward Larry Nance, and center Brad Daugherty could tease the Cleveland basketball fans with promise of an NBA finals run. However, an Eastern Conference crowded with dynasties by the Celtics, Pistons, and Bulls and injuries robbed the city and the Cavs of a chance to win the championship. The Cavs remained a meddling team picking up lower playoff seeds when Mike Fratello took over for Lenny Wilkins. Bobby Phills, Terrell Brandon, Derek Anderson, and Zydrunas ilgauskas were painted perpetual over achievers until the team finally gave way to futility. Cleveland hoped point guard Andre Miller would usher in a new era of winning, but the fans would have to wait until the arrival of LeBron James in 2003 until the franchise had its first superstar and its first real chance to contend. LeBron would take the Cavs to four straight conference finals appearances and one NBA Finals appearance, but delivered no championships. No matter what mix of talent he played with, though admittedly subpar compared to the rest of the league, King James ended each season with more and more acrimony. LeBron has left, but the Cavs hope they have found a savior in Kyrie Irving, the first pick in the 2011 NBA draft.
