Then he tried to pry Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies, but the Grizzlies matched the offer and retained the restricted free agent's services. The Houston Rockets now must begin the short season with Hasheem Thabeet and Jordan Hill down low. Furthermore, there is still fallout from the failed trade. Shooting guard Kevin Martin, the best player left on the roster took the trade attempt very personally. An upset Martin means one less offensive weapon in an already depleted arsenal. The additions of Jonny Flynn and rookies Marcus Morris and Chandler Parsons are not likely to offset the situation. Hopefully Martin and the front office can rebuild an amiable relationship. Also, Martin would benefit from the further development of Chase Budinger. It took a while, but Chase Budinger has finally become a good NBA basketball player. Post All Star break he averaged 14.4 points and shot 35.3 percent from three. Without an established center he and Martin will have to be more creative scorers. They both possess the athleticism to become multi-dimensional scorers, but having the ability does not always equate with success in this league. This is an NBA roster with much midlevel and near star talent. This makes the Rockets a dangerous team and gives McHale some hope of ending the regular season with enough wins to sneak into the NBA playoffs. Thus, despite all the setbacks, a Houston Rocket ticket is not a basketball ticket purchased in vain.

The Houston Rockets have quite an understated history. They began as one of the western most franchises, set in San Diego from 1967 to 1971, but found a community waiting to embrace the professional basketball team in Houston. The key to the franchise's success has always been the big man. Elvin Hayes, Moses Malone, Ralph Sampson, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Yao Ming have all manned the center position and played the team into the playoffs. These big men have been the impetus for four NBA Finals appearances and two championships. The first appearance came in 1981. Moses Malone led the league in rebounding and was the centerpiece of an unlikely contender. They entered the postseason 40-42 and went on a run that ended in defeat to the Boston Celtics in the Finals. To this day, the 1980-1981 Rockets remain the only NBA team with a losing record to appear in the final series of the season schedule. The second finals appearance came five seasons later. Malone had left and the Rockets had rebuilt around exceedingly tall and slender center Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon, a power forward developing excellent foot work in the post. The Rockets went an impressive 51-31 in the regular season and proved their worth by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the Western Conference Finals. Once again, the Rockets met the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Once again, Larry Bird and crew dispatched Houston in six games. Not every finals appearance would result in a loss to the Celtics. The Houston Rockets repeated as champions in 1994 and 1995. The NBA was up for grabs in Michael Jordan's absence and the Rockets had built a roster around Olajuwon. Hakeem had perfected the Dream Shake and earned the defensive player of the year, the NBA MVP, and the Finals MVP as the center and his crew of NBA castoffs beat the New York Knicks in seven games. The next season the Rockets only went 47-35, but they reached the finals again and met a young Shaq and the Orlando Magic. Again Olajuwon won the Finals MVP and the Rockets swept the young and unprepared Magic.
