 The Indiana Pacers began their franchise history as an ABA dynasty, but have long since struggled to establish the team as a perennial NBA favorite despite playing basketball in Indiana. From 1967 to 1976 the Pacers enjoyed phenomenal play of superstars like Mel Daniels, George McGinnis, Jimmy Rahl, and several others. These basketball rosters delivered three wins in four seasons and five conference titles. The ABA-NBA merger stripped this roster of its talent and threatened to bankrupt the team. They survived only to endure a decade of futility at the bottom of the standings. In 1987 the front office chose Reggie Miller over local hero Steve Alfred. Much maligned at first, the decision would pay dividends as the Indiana Pacers entered the 1990s. Miller, center Rik Smits, point guard Mark Jackson, and Dale Davis helped take the team, under Larry Bird's direction from the bench, reach the 2000 NBA Finals. They were supposed to be swept by the Los Angeles Lakers, but the team fought to a respectable Game 6, relying on a smooth offense and surprisingly tough interior defense to drag out the series. Isiah Thomas proceeded Bird, and Rick Carlisle followed him. By 2003 the Pacers appeared ready to compete in the Leastern Conference. Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson, and Jermaine O'Neal were a formidable trio defensively and offensively, but the brawl on the road against the Detroit Pistons led to suspensions and had thwarted any momentum. The years after the brawl were spent dealing those tainted players away and rebuilding the roster and the once-pristine reputation of the Indiana Pacers franchise. They appear to have finally built a winner, with Danny Granger, Paul George, and many more economical free agent pickups and solid draft picks.
