The Clippers merely need to find a point guard who can bring the ball up the floor, occasionally penetrate, and have enough sense to throw the ball back out once the defense collapses. Unfortunately, the free agent market is devoid of such a player. Instead, Mo Williams will be asked to play more of a point than a combo guard role and Coach Vinny Del Negro will secretly be hoping Eric Bledsoe makes some sort of exponential improvement in time to transfer Williams to the bench, where he can be effective as a scorer in relief of Gordon. In other free agent news, the Clips have to decide whether resigning restricted center DeAndre Jordan is a priority. Jordan provides the interior defense, the athleticism, and the ability to grab rebounds at a rather high rate. He is not the offensive talent a healthy Chris Kaman is, but he is also going to be several million dollars less per season and can take some of the defensive pressure off Griffin, who can make up the scoring difference. So far, Los Angeles has already overpaid for Caron Butler, bringing the small forward to the Staples Center for three years and $24 million. Butler is turning 32, is coming back from a knee injury, and needs the ball a great deal to be an effective scorer. In signing Butler they made it clear that there will not be enough scoring opportunities to play Kaman in the starting lineup. It is in the Clippers best interest to resign Jordan. Kaman would be an amnesty clause candidate, but he is in the last year of his contract and could have trade value as a scoring center for a team with a passing point guard but no interior scoring help.

They played in this unlikely location from 1970 to 1978 before moving to San Diego post ABA-NBA merger. The San Diego Clippers did not stay long, ultimately moving north and sharing an arena with the Lakers since 1984. This team has been the second basketball team in a city with an unfathomable success known as the Lakers. The Clippers boast no titles and no division titles, but only young rosters with so much potential and so few results. Bob McAdoo made the Clippers a young competitive team in the middle of the 1970s, but he soon left upper New York State for New York City. After Randy Smith and World B. Free lit up the score board in the late 1970s, the Clippers took a more traditional route and signed a potential hall of fame center. Alas, Bill Walton spent more time on the injured list than on the court and the team struggled tragically. Los Angeles has had the talent to compete in the 21st century, but that talent has rarely played cohesively enough to make the Clippers true contenders. Darius Miles, Quentin Richardson, Elton Brand, Andre Miller, Bobby Simmons, and others could not do more than reach the postseason once. Now the Clippers have begun again, and, again, they have promising talent. The difference is Blake Griffin has the clear makings of a superstar. Perhaps this second decade of the 21st century will result in more than a single playoff appearance for the other NBA team playing at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
