Continuing with the season preview assuming this trade is not a realistic possibility, Smith is rumored to be interested in bringing Jamal Crawford further south to play at the Amway Center. The Orlando Magic will enter the 2011-2012 season schedule with the hopes of resigning Jason Richardson. One of the lone amnesty clause victims will be Gilbert Arenas. His departure frees nearly $20 million from the salary cap and gives the team a chance to spend one more season, or half a season, as a contender. Whether it is Crawford or Richardson, the Magic need to add or retain at least one perimeter threat to compete with the Miami Heat in the Southeastern Conference. There is enough now to secure a spot in the Eastern Conference side of the postseason. This season will be a trying one for fans. If Howard is to leave, then the Magic will fail to receive equal value in return. No team ever receives equal value in return when trading a superstar. Orlando must hope to receive something worthy of rebuilding within a few years.

 The Orlando Magic history began back in 1989. The NBA had thrived as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were part of the Golden Age and Michael Jordan had taken the sport of basketball to new heights. The first few seasons were spent struggling to put a competitive team on the floor. Then Shaquille O'Neal arrived and the future looked much brighter. Shaq dominated the interior, Penny Hardaway created shots off the dribble, and Dennis Scott and Nick Anderson sat in the corners awaiting an opportunity to shoot a three. This combination led to consecutive Atlantic Division titles in 1995 and 1996 and resulted in one NBA Finals appearance in 1995 for a sweep at the hands of the Rockets. Orlando thought they had a long prosperous future ahead of them, but soon Shaq moved to Los Angeles. Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady were supposed to be the next dynamic duo at the Amway Center, but instead of being perennial contenders the Magic endured perennial injuries to Hill. The Orlando Magic next tried to turn the tide with Steve Francis, but, again, injuries robbed the basketball team of victories. Eventually, Orlando did land a franchise player. Dwight Howard arrived in 2004 as a skinny high school center still growing into his body. He took to the weight room and worked on his rather raw offensive game. The Magic soon had a defensive force and a burgeoning post player. He provided the defense in 2009 as Orlando endured a difficult road to the NBA Finals, going 12-7 and dispatching LeBron James.
