Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Playoffs

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers just clinched a playoff spot with their 27-3 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 16. This does not mean the Steelers have nothing to play for going into Week 17. They will have Steelers tickets for what should be an easy win against the Cleveland Browns. Mike Tomlin and the boys will playing for the top spot in the AFC North, a home field postseason game played at Heinz Field, and the second first round bye.

The Steelers claim to fame is the defense, which allows a league low 14.9 points a game. Pittsburgh is able to hold the opposition to 216.3 passing yards (14th) and 64.1 rushing yards a game (1st). The team also specialized in taking the football away too. They forced the second most turnovers in the AFC, 32. Eighteen of those turnovers were interceptions and 14 were forced turnovers.

Want more praise for the defense? Linebacker James Harrison has 11 sacks, 2 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Safety Troy Polamalu trolls the middle of the field and makes plays, including 6 interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley has 8.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. This Pittsburgh Steelers team has a number of Pro Bowl caliber athletes, and Mike Tomlin has them on the field to thwart the opposition’s offense.

Pittsburgh’s offense is not one of those elite units in the NFL. They average a mere 22.3 points a game (17th), 218.9 passing yards a game (16th), and 121.6 rushing yards a game (9th). The best aspect of this unit may just be its ability to avoid turnovers. They gave the football away just 18 times (T-3rd fewest in the AFC), with 9 interceptions and 9 fumbles.

Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh Steelers Background

The Steelers played the first four games without Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger has had a great season considering he is playing through foot problems and a broken nose. He has throne for 2,920 yards and 15 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions. He is averaging 7.96 yards a pass and is completing 61.3 percent of his passes. All this combines for a 94.3 quarterback rating. Roethlisberger is not the running threat he has been thanks to his litany of injuries.

He has two very good weapons in wide receivers Mike Wallace and Hines Ward. Wallace is the deep threat averaging 20.2 yards a catch (of which he has 57). He is a constant threat to find endzone, as evident by his 9 touchdowns. Ward is mister dependable. He has 54 receptions, 710 yards, and 4 touchdowns. Tight end Heath Miller has not had the best season. With 38 receptions, 457 yards, and a single touchdown, it appears Roethlisberger’s best weapons are to the outside.

Pittsburgh has a real running game to go with Roethlisberger’s at-times inspired passing game. Running back Rashard Mendenhall has 1,237 yards and 11 touchdowns while picking up a decent 4 yards a carry. As the season has worn on he has become less and less of the focus. Still, he is good for nearly 20 carries a game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be having playoff tickets, that much is clear. Week 17 will clear up a few issues, mainly if the team will skip the first round, something the coaching staff desperately wants so a gritty Roethlisberger can rest and hopefully heal for a Super Bowl run.
